new Experiences

Life goes on.

The Pen is mightier than the Rapier

September 27, 2008

Despite the invention of the typewriter, computer and secretaries we continue to use pens to put our thoughts into record. Some of us will use any pen, even those five-dollar-for-1000 kind found at hotels. Maybe I’m a pen-snob (there’s no maybe about it bucko. -ed.) but even with the large variety each pen works best for a specific purpose.

Mind you, I realize that just as for me, a car is a car is a car regardless of my need and its designed purpose, for some of you a pen is a pen. It may be an issue of my absolute adoration of putting thoughts into the realm of the written but even a task as simple as note taking has a best suited writing implement.

Ballpoints for taking notes, while a felt tip is great for scribbling in a harder paged journal and should you ever be so lucky as to have parchment paper lying around use the original pen, the quill, or its modern day cousin the Fountain Pen.

The human mind is a devious thing; It can destroy, subvert, and betray. Yet it also lends itself towards compassion, love and the creative act. In spite of our abilities to act physically, It can’t possibly be as impressive as our feelings and thoughts. It’s the most evolved form of existence yet we hold it inferior to taking action.

The synthesis of the incorporeal into compelling is the finest act a person could do. The hardest one too, considering I am sitting here trying to put not only the thoughts regarding this into words but of desire and fulfillment, quite unsuccessfully. A single person with a single story will move nations and states out of apathy into cultural movement. An army cannot change the self-honest thoughts of a person, however much it may try.

That’s why we take to writing. We want to affect the world around us. Our worth is affirmed when the world changes due to our acts.

Now to quit being worthless.
