Has Microsoft lost it?
I missed this earlier in the week but Microsoft (via their Ad agency) has begun an... interesting marketing campaign for Windows Vista Home Server. Something so bizarre and irregular I honestly believe more focused sites have missed a wonderful opportunity to mock Microsoft.
Thankfully I have taken up the charge.
Servers are wonderful things, a few host this website. "Home Servers" are a marketing abomination. Specifically they're a categorical misplacement. What, for instance, is the difference between a "server," a "home server," and my Airport Express that hosts my printer and stereo? Those of you playing at home, quit throwing cheetos at the screen. There isn't a difference, aside perhaps from software running on the hardware.
The problem the Beast-master has is normal people don't care about servers except when they don't work. How should they convince the windows-using public there's a solution for a problem that doesn't exist? Write children's books to "brainwash" (gizmodo's word, not mine -ed.) their children and literally whine them into submission. It's just crazy enough to work! The probability it's a not really intended that way is high. But it's not very effective to convince a computer savvy person that yes virginia "home servers" are a great idea for you.
